Can Bettas Live With Other Fish? What to Do While You're Still Unsure

Yes, under conditions that have very little to do with which species you pick. Seriously Fish lists Betta splendens as "not recommended for the standard community aquarium" and sets its minimum aquarium base at 45 × 30 cm for the betta on its own. The standard US 10-gallon tank measures 20.25 × 10.5 inches in Aqueon's specification chart, which works out to 51.4 × 26.7 cm of floor. That is long enough and 3.3 cm too narrow. Ammonia and nitrite have to read zero before anything joins the betta: UF/IFAS Extension puts tissue damage from un-ionized ammonia at 0.05 mg/L and nitrite toxicity at 0.10 mg/L, and a new biological filter needs six to eight weeks to hold those readings. Choosing the species is the last decision you make, and the smallest.

I have spent close to twenty-five years around golf turf, the first stretch walking irrigation rounds in the dark. My father's pocket moisture probe still travels next to my green-speed notebook. The work taught one reflex that transfers to an aquarium: when a putt rolls slow, the putter is the last object worth suspecting. I blamed one once, then read the moisture number from that morning's watering and apologized to a perfectly good club. Green reading begins at the maintenance shed. Reading a betta begins at the tape measure.

Measure the floor, not the gallons

Gallons describe how much water you are lifting. Territory is decided by the floor, and two tanks sold under the same number can have different floors.

Aqueon publishes its glass aquarium dimensions in a specification chart. The tank most American beginners buy, the 10 Leader, is 20.25 × 10.5 × 12.56 inches. The 15 High is 20.25 × 10.5 × 18.75 inches. Same length, same width, five more gallons, and not one extra square inch of floor.

Then the ordinary 15, which Aqueon lists at 24.25 × 12.5 × 12.75 inches. Both hold 15 gallons, both with a filled weight of 170 pounds. The standard 15 carries roughly 43% more floor than the 15 High, and that difference is the whole answer to whether a tank mate has anywhere to be.

Three of those five fail the betta's own published minimum before a second fish is discussed. The 10-gallon misses by 3.3 cm of width, roughly two fingers. That number is not on the box.

What the water has to read before anything joins the betta

UF/IFAS Extension states the target plainly: in healthy ponds and tanks, ammonia levels should always be zero. Any reading above zero signals a system out of balance, and the publication treats it as a prompt for corrective action rather than a tolerance to spend.

The numbers underneath matter, because a test kit does not report them directly. Ammonia sits in water as ionized ammonium and un-ionized ammonia, and the un-ionized form is roughly 100 times more toxic. Damage begins at 0.05 mg/L. At 2.0 mg/L, fish die. Nitrite is toxic from 0.10 mg/L. The Merck Veterinary Manual draws the same lines clinically: freshwater fish generally tolerate total ammonia nitrogen below 1 mg/L, and un-ionized ammonia at 0.05 mg/L already causes histologic changes to gill tissue.

Your kit measures total ammonia nitrogen, the two forms together. Converting that to the toxic fraction takes pH and temperature. UF/IFAS works the example: a reading of 1.0 mg/L at 75°F and pH 8.0 gives a multiplication factor of 0.0502, so the un-ionized ammonia present is 0.0502 mg/L. That reading sits inside Merck's freshwater tolerance and over the damage threshold at once.

Warming the tank for a betta moves the line

This is the part that catches people who did everything else right. The un-ionized fraction rises with temperature, and a betta wants warm water.

Reading down the UF/IFAS conversion table at pH 8.0, the factor is 0.0502 at 24°C, 0.0574 at 26°C, 0.0654 at 28°C, and 0.0743 at 30°C. The same 1.0 mg/L kit reading becomes about 48% more toxic across the betta's temperature range. UF/IFAS calculates that table from Emerson and colleagues' 1975 aqueous ammonia equilibrium work.

pH moves it harder. At pH 7.0 and 30°C the factor drops to 0.0080, roughly nine times lower than at pH 8.0. FishBase and Seriously Fish both give Betta splendens a pH range of 6.0 to 8.0, so a keeper at the top of that range has made every ammonia reading about nine times more dangerous than a keeper at the bottom, with the identical number in the test tube.

Two more UF/IFAS figures belong here. A new biofilter needs six to eight weeks to build enough bacteria to control ammonia and nitrite. If alkalinity falls below 20 mg/L the nitrifying bacteria stop functioning, which is how a cycled tank quietly stops being cycled.

A single schooling fish is not a companion

The most common failure I see is buying one small fish to keep a betta company. Shoaling species do not work that way, and their published group requirements make small tanks impossible rather than crowded.

Seriously Fish says the harlequin rasbora "should be kept in a group of at least 8-10 specimens" and gives it a minimum base of 60 × 30 cm. Corydoras pygmaeus carries the instruction that "it's best to buy at least 6, preferably 10 or more," on a 45 × 30 cm base. Corydoras habrosus, a fish only 5 mm longer, wants a group of at least 4 to 6 and a 60 × 30 cm base. Two dwarf corydoras of nearly identical size, different floor requirements. Size on the shelf tells you almost nothing.

Run the arithmetic before the purchase. Eight harlequins at 45 mm standard length is 360 mm of fish arriving at once, next to a betta of 70 mm. That is five times the betta's body length in a single afternoon, and every millimeter produces ammonia into water you have just warmed.

Where a betta's numbers overlap a tank mate's

Compatibility is an overlap of published ranges you can calculate before spending anything. These are Seriously Fish's figures for four species that appear on betta tank mate lists.

Intersect the betta with pygmy corydoras and harlequin rasboras and the survivable window shrinks to 22–26°C, pH 6.4 to 7.4, 1 to 8 dGH, on a base of at least 60 × 30 cm. FishBase gives the betta a floor of 24°C rather than 22°C, which narrows the temperature agreement to 24–26°C. Those intersections are my arithmetic on their published ranges rather than a finding of theirs, so treat the edges as soft. The shape holds either way: a four-degree window, one pH unit, and a floor three of the five Aqueon tanks cannot provide.

One conflict is worth flagging. Seriously Fish gives Betta splendens 70 mm standard length; FishBase records 6.5 cm total length. Standard length excludes the tail fin, so the second figure should be the larger one. I have found no source reconciling the two, and would rather leave that visible than average them into a number nobody published.

The goldfish question, in three measurements

Goldfish appear beside bettas in searches constantly, and the pairing fails three tests before temperament is discussed.

Length is the first. FishBase records Carassius auratus at a maximum published 48.0 cm total length, 1.6 kg, and a maximum reported age of 41 years. Betta splendens is 6.5 cm. PetMD puts adult goldfish at 1 to 18 inches by variety and asks 5 gallons per inch of body length.

Temperature is the second, and closer than people expect. PetMD gives goldfish 65–75°F and states they "are not suited for tropical aquariums." Aqueon's care guide asks 68 to 74°F for fancy goldfish, 60 to 70°F for comets and shubunkins. FishBase gives Betta splendens 24–30°C, or 75.2–86.0°F. On those sources the windows never touch, missing by two-tenths of a degree. Seriously Fish is more generous with the betta at 22–30°C, opening a band of roughly 72 to 75°F. Either reading leaves one animal permanently at the edge of its range.

Volume is the third and settles it. Aqueon asks at least 20 gallons per common goldfish, 10 per adult fancy. A 20 Long, the largest tank in the table above, is one goldfish by that standard, with nothing left for a betta's territory.

There is a chemical sting in the tail. Aqueon puts the goldfish's ideal pH at 7.0 to 8.4, meeting the betta's 6.0 to 8.0 only between 7.0 and 8.0, which is precisely where the un-ionized ammonia fraction climbs about ninefold. That runs the highest-waste fish a beginner buys at the pH that makes its waste most toxic.

What to do while you are still unsure

Uncertainty is a working state. Everything below can be done with the fish you already own.

  1. Measure the inside floor of the tank in centimeters, length by width, and write the number down. Ignore the gallon label from here on.
  2. Test ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature on a fixed schedule and log every reading. UF/IFAS recommends testing tanks at least once a week.
  3. Convert each ammonia reading to un-ionized ammonia using the pH and temperature factor before deciding it is safe. A number under 1 mg/L can still be over 0.05.
  4. Require an unbroken run of zero ammonia and zero nitrite for several weeks before considering anything new.
  5. Look up the full group requirement and minimum base of every candidate, multiply the group by its adult length, and compare that base against your measured floor. The larger requirement wins.
  6. Quarantine any new fish for a minimum of 30 days in a separate cycled container. The Merck Veterinary Manual sets that floor, notes that adding another fish restarts the clock, and suggests two further weeks of monitoring alongside a few established residents.
  7. Set up the separation plan before the introduction, never after. A cycled second container or a divider already in the house is the difference between an incident and a loss.

If the floor measurement fails, stop at step one. A betta alone in a well-run 10-gallon is a good outcome and costs nothing. Winter, wind in the chimney and an evening to fill, is a decent season to spend on measurements rather than livestock.

My own preference, stated plainly so you can discount it: I would rather keep one betta correctly than supervise a community. That is the maintenance shed talking again.

Questions people actually ask

What fish can live with a betta?

Small, short-finned, peaceful species whose published requirements overlap the betta's, on a floor of at least 60 × 30 cm. Pygmy corydoras and harlequin rasboras are common choices, kept in the groups Seriously Fish specifies: at least 6 for the corydoras, 8 to 10 for the rasboras. The tank qualifies a species, never the reverse.

What fish cannot live with bettas?

Anything with trailing finnage, anything that nips fins, anything needing a different temperature band, and another betta. Seriously Fish notes that ornamental strains are more aggressive than other Betta species and that only one individual can be kept per tank in most cases. Goldfish fail on adult size, volume and temperature simultaneously.

Can betta fish live with goldfish?

No. FishBase records goldfish at up to 48.0 cm and 1.6 kg against a betta's 6.5 cm, and Aqueon asks 20 gallons per common goldfish. PetMD gives goldfish 65–75°F and states they are unsuited to tropical aquariums, while FishBase puts bettas at 75.2–86.0°F. The two temperature windows do not overlap.

What fish can live with a betta in a 10 gallon tank?

By published base requirements, none of the usual candidates. Aqueon's 10 Leader gives 51.4 × 26.7 cm of floor, which is 3.3 cm narrower than the 45 × 30 cm minimum Seriously Fish sets for a betta kept alone. Snails and shrimp add no floor requirement, but schooling fish will not fit legitimately.

Can I keep a female betta with other fish?

Sex does not remove aggression. Seriously Fish records that males and females are usually maintained separately unless breeding, and describes the species as unsuitable for the standard community aquarium without distinguishing by sex. A female betta faces the same floor, temperature and group-size arithmetic as a male.

How long should I quarantine a new tank mate?

Thirty days minimum, in a separate cycled container, per the Merck Veterinary Manual. Adding any further fish during that window restarts the count. Merck also suggests an extra two weeks in which the new fish is watched alongside a few residents from the established tank before full introduction.
