How to Block a Knitted Sweater: What Actually Changes

To block a knitted sweater, read the fiber content on the ball band, block a gauge swatch the way you will treat the garment, then soak the sweater about 10 minutes in lukewarm water at approximately 30 °C (86 °F) with a mild wool detergent, the hand-washing method The Woolmark Company publishes for wool. What blocking changes and what it refuses to change

Blocking is a wash whose drying you control. Water lets the yarn's twist relax and the stitches settle where the fiber wants them; the pins decide what shape they hold while it happens. The fibers disagree about the rest. Non-superwash wool is forgiving: its cuticle scales grip, the fabric keeps the shape you pin, and the change repeats identically at every wash. Superwash wool is a different fabric under the same name. Roughly three-quarters of superwash yarn goes through the chlorine-Hercosett process, which erodes those scales and seals the fiber under a polyamide-epichlorohydrin resin. Without scales the stitches sit beside one another without interlocking, so a soaked superwash sweater grows, mostly downward, under its wet weight. Acrylic barely reacts to a cold soak and then changes permanently under heat. Cotton keeps whatever length you give it; alpaca and silk drape further every wash.

A generic instruction hides its own conditions, and that is a manufacturing defect. I wrote the heating panels on the backs of frozen-food boxes in Cincinnati for eleven years, where any printed number has to survive the worst reader in the worst kitchen. Good panels end in a check the reader can perform, heat until the centre reads 165 °F (74 °C), the USDA's reheating temperature. Weak ones end in a duration. One of my minutes went out wrong on a lasagne; four million boxes carried it, and the recall cost more than I was paid that year. "Soak twenty minutes and pin it out" is the same defect: a duration with no fiber condition, and no way to tell while you work whether it is succeeding.

The fiber percentage, and what it hides

In the United States the percentage on your ball band is a legal disclosure. The Textile Fiber Products Identification Act covers yarn sold to consumers, and 16 CFR § 303.3 sets the threshold: fibers of 5% or more by weight are named in descending order of predominance, and anything under 5% is designated only as "other fiber" unless it has clearly established functional significance. The FTC's example of that exception is "96 percent Acetate / 4 percent Spandex."

A band reading "75% Merino Wool / 25% Nylon" tells you the nylon is a quarter of the yarn by weight, so the fabric has more recovery than pure wool, and that anything below 5%, an elastic core for instance, may stay invisible.

What the percentage withholds is the finish. Superwash is a treatment, not a fiber, and never appears there: treated and untreated merino both label as "100% Wool" while behaving so differently in water that they belong in separate tutorials. Look for "superwash" or "machine washable" in the care symbols. Yarn from a destashed bag with no band gives you neither, and the swatch test stops being optional.

Block a swatch and write down two numbers

The Craft Yarn Council's Standard Yarn Weight System puts Medium, Category 4, at 16 to 20 stitches per 4 inches in stockinette, and prints its own caveat in capitals: "GUIDELINES ONLY." Your pattern's gauge outranks the category chart, and your blocked swatch outranks both.

Work it as arithmetic. The pattern wants 20 stitches and 28 rows to 4 inches after blocking. Cast on 30, work a swatch big enough to measure well inside its edges, and measure it off the needles: 22 stitches to 4 inches. Wash and dry it exactly as you will wash and dry the sweater, then measure again: 20 stitches to 4 inches. That shift is a 10% gain in width. If the body is 220 stitches around, it measures 40 inches off the needles and 44 after blocking, and you knew it before the garment went near water.

Ten percent should alarm anyone who has read a factory spec. AATCC 135, the test method for dimensional change after home laundering, sets no pass mark of its own; the limit comes from the buyer's technical package, where knit programmes commonly hold ±5% and many brands reject past 3%. Factory knitwear is engineered so washing changes nothing. A hand-knit is engineered so washing changes something specific, once, in a direction you picked.

Bigger and smaller are different jobs

The best measured data on the "bigger" question is a swatch experiment published by YarnSub: eleven identical swatches in Cascade 220, a 100% wool, worked on 4.5 mm needles to a natural width of 14 cm. Pinned to 19 cm and dried, they sprang back to 17 cm the moment the pins came out, losing about half the stretch. Past roughly 5% over natural size the stitches start to look distorted. After one further wash with no stretching, the swatches "returned (almost) to their original size."

To keep 5%, pin to 10%, and redo it after every wash. Blocking a sweater bigger is a maintenance schedule, not a repair.

Smaller has a blunter answer. You cannot pin fabric below its relaxed size. What gets called blocking smaller is letting an over-stretched garment relax, dried flat with no tension and eased gently inward, which recovers imposed stretch and nothing else. The only process that takes size out of wool is felting: heat, moisture and agitation together lift the cuticle scales until they interlock. It cannot be reversed or aimed at one dimension, which is why Woolmark's hand-wash guidance sits at approximately 30 °C.

How long to soak a sweater before blocking

Woolmark's published instruction is exact: "hand wash in clean, lukewarm water, approximately 30°C, using a mild and gentle detergent," then "allow to soak for a period of 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly firstly in lukewarm water, then finally in cold water." Ten minutes wets a sweater through to the core. Wool is slow to take water because it repels it at the surface, so dry patches at five minutes are normal.

Longer soaking is the wrong lever. What wrecks a sweater is temperature and agitation. An hour at 30 °C with nothing moving does very little; four minutes of stirring in hot water does damage you cannot undo. Push the garment under with a flat hand and leave it.

Getting it out is where most damage happens. Never lift a wet sweater by the shoulders. Gather it, support the whole weight underneath, move it to a bath towel, then roll the towel and press along it. Woolmark's wording is worth memorising: "do not rub, pull and wring out." Wringing feels efficient and is the fastest way to elongate the stitches you are about to spend an afternoon shaping.

Pin to the schematic, not to yourself

This trap comes from ordinary garment-fitting sense. The Craft Yarn Council's sizing charts state their scope in capitals: "THESE ARE ACTUAL BODY MEASUREMENTS." The number you want is the finished measurement on the schematic, which is a body measurement plus the ease the designer drafted. CYC's fit-and-ease guidance runs from very close fitting at 2 to 4 inches less than your actual bust or chest, through zero ease, to classic fit at 2 to 4 inches more, loose fit at 4 to 6 inches more, and oversized beyond 6.

Back to the arithmetic. The unblocked body measured 40 inches. If your chest is 40 inches, a tape measure and no schematic says the sweater already fits, and you wear a zero-ease garment drafted with 4 inches of ease, armholes and sleeve caps included. Pin to 44 and the shaping lands where it was drawn.

Blocking wires threaded through the edge stitches give a straight selvedge with no scalloping, held by rust-proof T-pins; ordinary dressmaker's pins leave orange marks on wet wool. Blocking without pins works too. A thick bath towel on a spare bed works if you pat the garment to the schematic measurements and check them again an hour later; you lose the sharp edges, nothing more.

Drying is the step everyone under-times

Woolmark's research states that "wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight before feeling wet and clinging to the skin," a comfort feature in a coat and a trap in a blocking session. A sweater that reads dry to the back of your hand can still carry a third of its own weight in moisture. Unpin it there and it relaxes out of the shape you set; fold it away and it will smell of a damp cupboard.

The check costs nothing. Weigh the sweater dry on a kitchen scale before it goes into the water, and weigh it again when you think it is finished. Same number, it is finished. That is the centre-temperature check again, and the only part of this process with a real pass mark.

Expect 24 to 48 hours flat in a normally heated room, longer for dense cables or a humid week, less with a fan moving air across it. The one I pinned out before starting this piece has had two hours, and I looked up genuinely surprised at how fast the afternoon went. Dry flat and out of direct sunlight, which Woolmark specifies, and never on a hanger, where the water weight drags the shoulders down.

Steam, irons, and the change you cannot undo

Steam blocking suits acrylic and stubborn cotton, and it can ruin a garment in seconds. Acrylic is polyacrylonitrile, a thermoplastic, and its glass transition sits somewhere between about 75 °C and 105 °C depending on comonomer, finish and moisture. Published sources disagree on where a given yarn lands, which is the whole problem, because domestic steam arrives near 100 °C and moisture lowers the effective transition further. Above it the chains slide and lock on cooling into a flatter, shinier, limper fabric. Knitters call this killing acrylic. It is a legitimate technique for extreme drape in lace, and it is permanent.

Hold the iron above the fabric and let the steam fall; the soleplate never touches it. Work in short bursts, cool the piece completely before unpinning, and test a swatch of the same yarn first. Spray blocking, a light mist and a gentle pat, is the low-risk option when a curling edge is all you need to fix.
